The purpose of this technique is same as Southern Blotting but here the molecules transferred to the solid membrane are of RNA. Northern Blotting is used to identify the RNA molecules. RNA molecules are separated by agarose or polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Then they are transferred to membrane such as nylon. This membrane could be then hybridized with labeled RNA or DNA probes and can be clearly detected using x-ray. Northern blotting is helpful in analysis of gene expression. It is also known as Northern hybridization or RNA hybridization.

The procedure and theory for the northern blotting is same as Southern Blotting except that it is used for isolation and identification of RNA molecules.Kindly see the Southern Blotting for more information.
